Making Art with Angelina Fibres and Plastic Food Wrappers

After working with Hot Fix Angelina Fibres and plastic in the workshop I did a few weeks ago, I wanted to give it another go and put my own twist on those ideas. I had only a vague idea of what I wanted to achieve, so there was quite a lot of trial and error, and seeing what worked.

My first step was to take food wrappers that I’d collected and cut them into circles and rings.

Next, I made a circle template onto baking paper and started arranging the Angelina and wrapper circles and rings within that space. I then put more baking paper over the top and ironed it to fuse the fibres together.

A few words of warning: make sure you are definitely using Hot Fix Angelina. I discovered that one of mine was just the regular type and so didn’t fuse properly. Fortunately, I got around that in the next step, by fusing it with Mistyfuse.

Also, as you can see from my experiments, the rings shrivelled up too much, so I ended up using circles and cutting the middle out after heating.

Once I’d made a few disks (and wasn’t completely happy with many of them) I layered a few of them up and fused them together with Mistyfuse, making sure not the heat the plastic wrappers much more again. I put some onto fabric using this same method.

I have four pieces now, which still need some work doing on them, but that I like so far. It’s very difficult to capture in photos just how shimmery and beautiful these are, but they kind of remind me of space.
