Geometric Style Cards, Made Easy!

Lately, I’ve been wanting to make a new style of card for my Etsy shop. This was, in part, brought on by how much fun I had making and printing with the collagraphs I made and the geometric patterns I chose to use. I wanted to use those geometric patterns with my abstract painting, because I thought the contrast between the order of the pattern and randomness of the painting might be interesting and look good. When it came down, however, to the logistics of replicating the cards on a bigger scale than one or two (and having them be consistent) I started experimenting with creating templates.

The templates I ended up making and using in my examples below can be found and downloaded here if you are interested in having a go yourself! Note, the templates have been designed with a 135mmx135mm square card in mind.

I began by drawing up some rough designs to see what would/wouldn’t work.

I then painted some regular copy paper with a mixture of acrylic paint and acrylic inks.

I drew up my rough designs on the computer and then printed them onto back of paper and the card I was going to use.

I then made them up, which was quite fiddly and more time consuming than I expected it to be.

This is my finished result! I used the positive and negative from the designs which I think both look equally as good.

If you’d like to try your hand at this, you can download the templates from Dropbox here.
