Daily Collage Journal Look Through

So here is another daily challenge look through. This time it is a collage journal. My main thinking behind doing it was three-fold. One, I had a load of painted scrap papers in a box that I wasn’t doing anything with; two, I had an old sketchbook that I’d done a few pages of work in that I didn’t like and then abandoned; and three, I wanted to work more on composition as I felt it was something I didn’t give enough time to.

If you’d like to give this challenge a go, or even if you are just a fan of pretty hand painted paper, you can get yourself a bag of my scrap papers over at my Etsy shop. They come in a Blue/Green colour way or a Red/Orange colour way. (Handy hint: if you buy one of each you have two sets of complimentary colours which look great together!) All bags are different, with different designs, hues and paper weights, which give you a great selection to work with. Take a look at them here!

Anyway, back to my collage journal!

Collaging allowed me to really work on my composition. I could put different elements on a page without having to commit to their placement. It meant I could move things around, switch things in and out and adjust the sizes of elements to make them fit better.  I tried working with different colour combinations, but a lot of my pages ended up being green and red. Also I tried using more natural and organic shapes, but ultimately I favoured using more geometric ones.

As much as I enjoyed this project, I feel like it may have gotten a little repetitive, especially in my colour/composition choices. Carrying on with it until the end of the sketchbook, instead of stopping part way through, did make me keep experimenting and trying new things, which I think was for the best. I definitely have my favourite pages and I definitely think there are a few that didn’t work as well, but as with all my daily projects, it has never been about consistently making the best thing I can possibly make, but instead it has been about giving myself the time and space to be creative.

If you’d like to see more of my daily challenges, you can check out my original Daily Art Journal challenge, my Scribble a Day challenge and The 100 Day Project that I most recently completed. I found these three challenges really useful in kick starting my creativity and they were great ways for me to try out new things.

I have another Daily Art Journal coming soon that I started a few days after my last one finishes, which you can follow along the progress of, on Instagram.

However, I’ve decided that it will probably be the last one for a while. I’ve started to feel like my journals, particularly the art journals, have gotten a little same-y. I’ve also noticed that I’m doing less art, which I think it down to relying on my journals as my allocated ‘art for the day’ instead of stepping outside my journals and, ironically, trying new things!
